Additionally, if you (not you lol, but those struggling with the new system) are really worried about some unskilled dorf using up all your resources, I'd recommend assigning a singular skilled dwarf to a given workshop and putting your high-quality requests into that one alone.

What are work details? Work details are the game's new system for organizing dwarves into different categories to determine what sort of jobs different dwarves do. While the game attempts to have dwarves do whatever they have the most skill at, this isn't necessarily sufficient to allow for properly prioritizing their work.

In general, however, and depending on what environment you have embarked in, the priorities are: Shelter for your dwarves and their stuff. Alligators, badgers, keas and langurs will kill your dwarves and/or steal their stuff if you aren't prepared for them. Farms, underground and/or above ground to feed your dwarves.
