First thing I always do is go to, read the journal from the corpse, then through Helgen (well, you have to exit out the doors and go around to the cave and enter that way. You technically can't go "through" Helgen with LAL). I cannot hire a steward in my playthrough. I always hire Rayya so I know she can be one.
