In my testing I temporarily disconnected the negative cable leading from the ESS battery to the main battery's negative post and left it dangling. I attempted to cold crank the 3.6L and on first attempt it failed. But on second attempt it succeeded, turning on the ESS off light in the EVIC.

Here's my attempt at a diagram that illustrates the battery connections for the 3.6L ESS dual batteries. Hopefully this will help make sense of why things work the way they do. I tried to show that when you pull the battery terminals off of the battery, there is still an electrical connection between the cables attached to the battery terminal.So either your install is incorrect, or something connected to your aux battery is drawing down the power. I would let it sit and check it daily with a voltmeter. The voltage should not be dropping. The charging issue should be the opposite.
