If it spotted you, you'll always hear it near. If it didn't spot you it may pass/hover over you, but if it doesn't stay it didn't see you. Last time I successfully hid there would be periods where I couldn't hear it at all about every hour or so. If you hear the helicopter and you have ANY line of sight to outside, it's seen you.
