It should run a steady stream about 1/2 the diameter of a pencil. Leaks on top of the pump won't cause slobber from the exhaust. If the engine has been apart recently, it shouldn't be too big of a deal to pull the hood and exhaust manifold. That will tell you which cylinders are wet/dry. Not always easy to tell whether it's fuel or oil at this point.
