The mega sloth is not a cryptid, FYI. Like the yao guai, mole rats, rad rats, stingwings, deathclaws etc etc it's simply a mutated version of an animal that existed in the area before the bombs dropped. All of the answers to your questions are literally in the notes/terminals/holos you get during the quest. Mostly at the cabin where you activate the event. A fair number of other people asked the same questions when the quest first came out, so a little googling would have gotten you the answers.
