The only time I've done it, I tried to stick to history as much as possible. Like, I wouldn't try conquering the world in ck3, for example. I'd focus on a smaller goal like uniting England in ck3, roll into eu4 and try and colonize north America (as historically as I can) then move into vic2 (now vic3) and try to work on trade and economic dominance or something.
