The "no dash" models were made from 1965 to 1972. R prefix serial numbered guns began in 1969. The 60-1 marked guns started in 1972.

Nickel finish was fairly common on model 19s, but if it looked good shape when you bought and is now flaking I`d consider it suspect. But there are some kinds of cleaning solvents that are hard on nickel finish. You have a .38 Military & Police model of 1905, 4th change, dating from the 1920s. I believe that S&W began stamping the one line "Made in USA" on the right side after 1921. The large ejector rod knob went away in the late twenties. I think you'd be pretty safe assuming a ship date of later 1965 or early 1966, but the only way you'll ever know for sure is with a factory letter. Hope this helps, teesur. My 28-2 has serial # S265XXX, and was purchased new on 9-28-65, according to the invoice. Not sure of actual ship date, but it was prior to 66-67.
